What Kindergarten Really Requires
Most people think kindergarten readiness means knowing the alphabet, counting to ten, and being able to sit still long enough to follow instructions.

Modern kindergarten classrooms move fast. Teachers are managing 20 to 25 children, covering reading, writing, math, social studies, and science in a single school day. Children who arrive without strong executive functioning — the ability to regulate their emotions, focus their attention, manage transitions, and problem-solve independently — struggle to keep up, regardless of how many letters they can recite.
A 2023 systematic review by the Campbell Collaboration, one of the most respected research bodies in education, found that children who received Montessori-based early education showed measurably stronger executive function, social cognition, and academic performance compared to peers in traditional settings.
The difference was not about memorizing more facts. It was about how children learned to think.
What Montessori Kindergarten Readiness Actually Looks Like

A Montessori-prepared child walks into kindergarten knowing how to choose a task and see it through to completion without being told what to do next. They have practiced this skill every day in our classroom, where children select their own work within a prepared environment and develop sustained focus through hands-on, self-directed activity.
A Montessori-prepared child knows how to resolve conflict with words. Our multi-age classrooms — where children across a two to three year age range learn together — give younger children daily models of mature behavior, and give older children daily practice in leadership and empathy.
A Montessori-prepared child has already been doing real reading and mathematics. Not worksheets. Not flashcards. Materials they can touch, manipulate, and use to construct understanding at their own pace, on their own timeline — which research shows produces deeper, more lasting learning than rote instruction.

Why This Matters More in Philadelphia
In the School District of Philadelphia, only 17 percent of students are reading at grade level and only 13 percent are meeting grade-level math standards, according to 2024-25 PSSA results.
The gap does not begin in elementary school. It begins in the years before — when children are not getting the early educational foundation they need to arrive at kindergarten ready to learn.
